Following a re-organisation of Champion’s Boxes by Sue Hay and the re-location of all the tools used for Geosite Maintenance, Peter Bridges found himself looking after an eclectic mix of 11 spades and shovels, considerably more than requirements.

There being no obvious disposal route, apart from the skip, Peter approached the Malvern Hills branch of Tools For Self-Reliance (TSFR) – the local branch of a charity established 40 years ago to provide tools to several countries in Africa – Ghana, Malawi, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Zambia. The charity’s recycling of used but good-quality tools allows recipients to develop new skills and provides opportunities to increase their standard of living.

Our shovels will be sent to projects in Africa supported by TFSR and the spades will be sold locally to raise funds for transport and training costs.

Details of the work the charity undertakes and the wide variety of tools they require can be found on their website www.tfsr.org. Clearing cluttered garages and sheds can have a very significant knock-on effect and TFSR need any spare tools that you may have.
