The expanse of geological time

The major divisions of geological time are shown in the diagram below.
Many of these divisions are represented by rocks to be found in the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The diagram shows the Precambrian as quite a small division, but in reality the Precambrian spans from around 540 million years ago to around 4600 million years ago!

To scale the Precambrian section needs to be shown as around seven and half times the height of the rest of the column of divisions. Note also the Quaternary at 1.8 million years of duration is much thinner than shown when drawn to scale.
