Since our last monthly news update, many more 25th Anniversary walks have successfully taken place and we thought you would be interested to some photos from some of these.

16 people took part in the EHT’s 25th anniversary walk along the Champions Trail in the Lickey Hills on 25th July 2021, guided by Julie Schroder. This was the first public walk led by the Lickey Hills Geo-Champions since November 2019. The Champions group members had spent some time previously making sure that all the sites were as clear as possible – quite a big job after many months of neglect. Many thanks.

Kate Andrew led the guided walk round Bromyard on 6th August 2021 and can be seen here (above) introducing the building stones of St. Peter’s Church in Bromyard.

Jim Handley has extended the original Champions trail on Little Doward to include much of Great Doward as well.  This 25th Anniversary walk on 17th August 2021 encompassed the best of both.  From the Doward campsite, the group walked down to view the vast expanse of Lordswood Quarry, and then on down to the Biblins to see a fine example of Tufa deposits.  From there they climbed gradually through the Devonian and Carboniferous rock sequences, stopping at a well-preserved lime kiln en route (shown above) then moved on to the limestone pavement on Little Doward, and via the limestone cliffs containing Arthur’s Cave back to the car park.  It was an action packed walk brimming with geological highlights, all infused with Jim’s characteristic enthusiasm.  All in all a really enjoyable walk.

A glorious day with amazing views on 22nd August 2021 (as seen above) saw Dick Bryant and Mike Brooks lead a walk from the Black Daren car park; spending the morning at both Black Daren and Red Daren looking at Devonian strata, landslip and rockfall topography, and the effects of periglacial and glacial conditions. In the afternoon the group spent time on the Cat’s Back, and walking on the Black mountains ridge.

We still have three walks remaining of our programme of 12, as listed below, so it’s still not to late to join in :

Walk 10: Tuesday 21st September: Landscape and Rocks of North Hill, Malvern, led by John Payne

Walk 11: Monday 27th September: Geology and Heritage Walk Hereford Cathedral & City, led by Moira Jenkins

Walk 12: Thursday 30th September: Explore Worcester City Centre, led by Beth Andrews
